Jamesport Post Office Building Collapses

August 19, 2020

Jamesport’s Post Office building collapsed around 9:15 Wednesday morning. The building was reduced to a pile of rubble. Officer in Charge Robert Shields had walked out of the post office just minutes before the collapse.
Mr. Shields had noticed, that morning, that some pieces of broken brick had fallen from the building into the street and it was a concern of Mr. Shields. He was also hearing pops and cracks and noticed that the inside brick wall had a bow to it. Just Wednesday morning he had been discussing the condition of the building with Post Master Rob Cracraft at Trenton. It fell shortly after. Fortunately, Mr. Shields was on the outside of the building talking to Menno Graber about the building when it went down. No one was hurt.
The building is owned by Terry Spillman.
The adjacent building was recently purchased by Menno and Verna Graber and they were preparing to make repairs to open a new store. Another business, Sue’s Soft Stuff, is also condemned at this time until repairs can be made. Mandy Prescott owns The Glamour Shop salon to the east and her building was not damaged.
Ironically, the highway sign, the flag and location of the post office still stands.
Mr. Shields said there was very little mail in the post office at the time.
Postal officials are looking for temporary quarters.
